Mitti General Manager Nuclear Assurance and Regulation August 12, 1985 Director of Nuclear Reactor Regulation United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission 7920 Norfolk Avenue Bethesda, Maryland 20814 Attention:
Mr. Walter Butler, Chief Licensing Branch 2 Division of Licensing Gentlemen:
FIRE BRIGADE TELECON OF AUGUST 1, 1985 HOPE CREEK GENERATING STATION DOCKET No. 50-354 This correspondence documents the results of a telecon on August 1, 1985 between Messrs. D. Wagner and D. Kubicki (NRC) and Messrs.
I. Mermelstein, J.
- Pantazes, P.
Eldreth, and T.
Storey of Public Service Electric & Gas Company (PSE&G).
The purpose of the subject telecon was to discuss a PSE&G proposal which affects a statement in the Hope Creek SER section 9.5.1.3 concerning fire brigade staffing.
The SER presently states, "By letter dated August 15, 1984 the applicant committed to provide a fire brigade consisting of dedicated personnel from an eight man trained fire fighting team capable of respond-ing to a fire at either Hope Creek or Salem".
PSE&G proposes to change the fire brigade staffing levels from an eight man dedicated brigade to a six man dedicated brigade.
The basis for this proposal ic a result of the recent reorganization within the PSE&G Nuclear Department and the reassignment of job duties previously assigned to the dedicated fire brigade which are now under the jurisdiction of other departments within the Nuclear Department.
Considering the fire brigade staff's current job assignments, PSE&G believes the six member dedicated brigade is sufficient to effectively perform and implement the brigade's assigned job duties for Salem and Hope Crock.

Director of Nuclear 2
8/12/85 Reactor Regulation As stated during the conference call the reduction from a dedicated eight member brigade, per shift, to a dedicated six member brigade, per shift, will not effect our capability nor our commitment to have five Fire Brigade members respond to a fire in either the Hope Creek or Salem Nuclear Plant.
We will continue to meet our commitment to have at least three members of the proposed six man team trained and suf-ficently knowledgeable in Hope Creek Safety Systems to under-stand the effects of fire and fire suppressants on safe shut-down capability.
PSE&G requests your review of this proposal and if acceptable, the SER be amended accordingly.
In the event you have any questions or require additional information, please contact us.
Very truly yours, 1.L. d HU
