NRC STAF.F REQUEST FOR EXTENSION OF TIME TO FILE RESPONSE TO APPLICANTS' MOTION FOR

SUMMARY

DISPOSITION OF CONTENTION 10.7 On July 18, 1985, Applicants filed a Motion for Summary Disposition of Joint Intervenors' Contention 10.7.

That contention challenges the adequacy of the environmental qualification of the hydrogen recombiners used at tSe Vogtle facility.

In their Motion, Applicants indicate that they will be using Westinghouse Model B recombiners at Vogtle. Applicants' conclusions on the adequacy of the qualification of the Model B recombiners are based upon testing of both the Model B and (similar) Model A Westinghouse recombiners.

The NRC Staff has previously reviewed the Westinghouse testing program for the Model A recombiners. The Staff has only recently received the testing data for the Model B recombiners and has not yet had a chance to fully review this material.

In order to respond adequately to Applicants' Motion, the Staff needs to complete its review of the Model B testing data and compare that inforniation with the results of the Model A testing program. The Staff anticipates that this review can be finished in a matter of weeks, but it can not be completed before the Staff's response to Applicants' Motion is due (August 12,1985). The Staff therefore requests that its time within which to respond to Applicants' Motion be extended until August 30, 1985.

Staff counsel has discussed this requested extension with representatives of both Joint Intervenors and Applicants; neither party ob,jects to grant of the request.

~

For the reasons presented above, the Staff respectfully requests that its request for an extension of time until August 30, 1985 to respond to Applicants' Motion for Summary Disposition of Contention 10.7 be granted.

Respectfully submitted,

/
