This letter is in confirmation of telephone conversations with pfr.

- Leger of the USEPA, Region 1, and Mr. Gerald Szal of the Mass. DWPC e
regarding notification of the discharge of untreated sewerage from the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station septic system.
On July 30, 1985, from approximately 1400-1600 hours, there was a malfunction of the Pilgrim Station sanitary septic system automatic pumps and high level warning lights.
This malfunction caused a backup and partial overflow of the system to the plant storm drains.
These drains empty to the discharge canal and eventually to the Cape Cod Bay waters at outfall number 001 (Condenser Cooling Waters).
The storm drains were blocked off by approximately 1600 hours0.0185 days
0.444 hours
0.00265 weeks
6.088e-4 months
and the overflow brougnt under control by 1800 hours0.0208 days
0.5 hours
0.00298 weeks
6.849e-4 months
.
The Pilgrim Station septic system was repaired on July 31, 1985 and the cause of its malfunction is being investigated.' No radioactive material was detected in the septic sy. stem contents and it was estimated that less than 100 gallons of its effluent. reached the discharge canal, which had a circulating flow of about 300,000 gallons per minute over'this time period. An investigation of the discharge canal on July 31, 1985 revealed no discernable effects of the sewerage release on marine life inhabiting it.
