January 17,1997 In Reply Refer To:
636/151 U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission A'ITN: Document Control Desk i
Washington, D.C. 20555 t
SUBJ: Commitment to Reactor Status - Docket #50-131 The staff at the Omaha VA Medical Nuclear Reactor Facility will ensure that the reactor will remain in a " secured" condition until the Nuclear Regulatory Commission has reinstated Mr.
John P. Claassen's Senior Reactor Operator license.
1The former Reactor Manager, Mr. Alan J. Blotcky, was aware of the renewal process.
l However, since the NRC was no longer conducting requalification exams, Mr. Blotcky 1
assumed that the operator's licenses would be renewed automatically without submission of NRC form 396 and 398 and therefore, took no action.
In order to prevent future noncompliance in this area, each operator's license status will be checked on an annual basis by the Reactor Safeguards Committee to ensure that each license is active.
