Docket Nos:::50-424-and 7 50,425 APPLICANT: Georgia Power Company FACILITY:
Vogtle, Units 1 and 2
SUBJECT:
SUMMARY
OF HYDROLOGIC SITE VISIT ON JUNE 19, 1985 On June 10, 1985, the staff met with the applicant and its representatives to discuss groundwater and geotechnical engineering issues and to observe drilling and permeability testing procedures.
Participants are listed in.
The staff visited the drill rig located at well cluster "A" located southeast of the power block (see Enclosure 2).to observe the water pressure testing in progress and the cores from this initial borehole.
Inspection of the cores showed the marl to be a very impermeable material.
The limestone lenses and nodules were a very hard, tight material. The clayey material surrounding the limestone could be scraped with the fingernail but was still hard and impermeable. There was no evidence to sand lenses as noted in at least one of the previous boring logs of the marl. There were some lenses of sandy clay where the sand content was obvious; however, the material was still fairly hard and impermeable.
The staff also visited the well cluster "B" location and watched the drill cres i
remove one of the cores. These cores were inspected and they were essentially the same as previously described.
The applicant summarized some of the geotechnical work and the groundwater programs. As part of the groundwater program, the applicant has contracted with a labornury to determine the distribution coefficients of cesium and strontium in the plant backfill. The applicant will furnish these results to the staff when available.
The staff also took a general site tour that included the locations of the l
observation wells for the permanent groundwater monitoring program, the l
river screenhouse, the rain gauge at the sewage treatment facilities, site drainage facilities, the rain gauge and recorder at the site meterological l
tower and the recorder that will be used for the recording wells.
Photographs were taken of the drilling setups, the cores, observation well locations and general site features.
