m Washington Public Power Supply System P.O. Box 968 3000 George Washington Way Richland, Washington 99352 (509)372-5000 Docket No. 50-460 August 5, 1985 G01-85-0155 Director of Nuclear Reactor Regulation Attention:

Elinor G. Adensam, Chief Licensing Branch No. 4 Division of Licensing U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D. C. 20555

Subject:

NUCLEAR PROJECT N0. 1 REQUEST FOR CODE CASE N-411 APPROVAL

Reference:

Letter, G01-85-Oll6, same subject, dated May 16, 1985 In the reference the Supply System requested approval to apply Code Case N-411 to the WNP-1 Project.

Based on conversations with the NRC staff, it is apparent that additional clarifications are needed to allow use of the Code Case.

1) Multiple response spectra methodology is being used for piping system analyses. Time history methods will not be used in conjunction with the Code Case.

2)

The Code Case will be used for optimization of pipe supports (both re-design and new design) to satisfy seismic requirements. As mentioned in the reference, the Code Case will also be used to reconcile previous designs to avoid hardware modifications.

3) For each analysis package where the Code Case is applied, the maximum displacements will be checked to verify adequate clearances exist with respect to adjacent structures, components, and equipment.

Pipe mounted equipment will also be verified to assure that the equipment can withstand the increased pipe motion.

4)

For each analysis package (anchor group) where the Code Case is applied, the Code Case will be applied t.

the entire analysis.

Regulatory Guide 1.61 requirements will not be mixed with the alternate criteria of this Code Case.

5) The use of this Code Case with these clarificitions will be documented in the next revision to the WNP-1 FSAR.
