REQUEST FOR CONFIRNATORY RADIOLOGICAL. SURVEY OF THE BABC0CK & WILCOX, LYNCHBURG RESEARCH CENTER (LRC),
LYNCHBURG, VIRGINIA, DOCKET 70-824 By letter dated May 28,198s, LRC submitted the results of their radiological survey of the Phase I area of Building C.
This survey supports LRC's application requesting the area be released for unrestricted use. We have reviewed the survey results and request your assistance in making a confirmatory survey to verify that the area has been decontaminated and meets the acceptable levels as specifled in Annex C to LRC's Materials License No. SNM-778 and the soil contanination levels listed in Table 4.2 of the licensee's submittal. The confirmatory survey should also be made to verify that the concentration of radioactive material in the drums meets the criteria for unrestricted release (Table 4.2 described above).
In a telephone conversation with Mr. A. Olsen of LRC on July 22,198b, he indicated that the roof of Building C has not been surveyed during the Phase I decontamination operation. LRC will survey the roof when all phases of the decontamination operation for the Building are cortpleted. Accordingly, the confirmatory survey for the roof area is not required at this time.
The results of the confirmatory survey and your recommendations should be transmitted to this Branch so that we nay take appropriate action.
