Mr. Raymond P. Berube Deputy Assistant Secretary for Environment U.S. Department of Energy Washington, DC 20585

Dear Mr. Berube:

As a followup to your meeting with Malcolm Knapp on December 30, 1996, I am requesting that you poll Department of Energy headquarters and field offices to develop an updated forecast of new projects and activities that will require review by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission during the remainder of Fiscal Year 1997 and Fiscal Years 1998, 1999, and 2000.

We plan to use this information as the basis for formulating budgets during April 1997, so we would appreciate receiving the update no later than March 1997.

We recognize the uncertainties associated with projections of work over this time period.

It would be helpful to us if you could identify the level of certainty associated with planned and potential work involving NRC. Your efforts in ensuring thorough and accurate forecasts of work involving NRC will help us prepare and budget for these activities.

Thank you for your cooperation.

If you have any questions, please have your staff contact Michael Weber, Chief of the fuel Cycle Licensing Branch, at (301) 415-7190 or via electronic mail at "mfw0nrc. gov."
