~ November 15, 1996 Mr. Richard II. Turtil Project Manager Division of Waste Management Orrict or Nuclear Material Safety and safeguards U.s. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D.C. 20555
Dear Mr. Turtil:
Pursuant to the telephone conversation of November 4,1996 between the undersigned, David Fauver, and you, the following additional clarification is provided in reference to the use of beta-gamma surface measurement probes of different face sizes in the performance of the Final Status Survey of the decontaminated Plainville facility of Engelhard Corporation.
The gas flow proportional detector with the 425 cm sq. probe was initially used to scan the decontaminated surfsuts and measure the beta-gamma levels on the Krld.
When elevated levels were found.
the G-M pancake detector with a 15 cm sq. probe was used to isolate the source er the elevated readings and additional decnniaminallon performed to remove the localized contamination. The aren was then remeasured with the smaller prnhe.
A fntal uranium level of approximately 3500 dpm/100 cm sq. was used as the upper limit for the 425 cm. Aq. penho. fr the 800 plus measurements taken. only three were found to initially exceed the 3500 dpm/100 cm sq. value.
Total uranium values are arrived at using a 2.0 multiplier on the beta-gamma readings from the gas flow proportional detector, and a 3,2 muluplier on the ' G-M detector readings (see Response to Cinements of September 14,1996 unti Attachment A of the Final Status' Survey Plan for conversion methodology).
Sincerely, 1
/
