Notification of Noncompliance With Effluent Limitations - NPDES Permit No. AL0022080 - Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant Description of the discharge:
Discharge 106 - Condenser Cooling Water Pump Station Sump. Analyses of grab samples taken on May 31 - June 1 indicated exceedance of the oil and grease values. This persisted until June 5, 1985 when the levels dropped and stayed below the daily average (15 mg/1).

Laborers, working around air vacuum pump spilled and flushed oil into the drainage trough to the sump area.
Steps taken to reduce, eliminate, and prevent recurrence of the noncomplying dischar6e:
The sumps were locked out immediately upon discovery of the excursion. The values given above were values in the sump and do not reflect what was discharged. Oil pillows were placed in the sump to absorb oil. The laborers were directed to use absorbant to remove oil rather than to flush with water.
