Description of ' he Discharge - Discharge No. 301 - Diffuser Discharge t
Structure Flow to Tennessee River. Tanks reading on the Raw Cooling Water System on August 28, 1985, ind:cated that the chlorine addition limit of 730 pounds per day had been exceeded. The calculated value was 740.5 pounds.
Cause and Period of Noncompliance -- The tank is checked once a day for consumption of sodium hypochlorite. The total residual chlorine levels are taken three times per day (onc sample per unit per shif t).
An appa-rent increase in demand of the raw water causing low levels of chlorine detection did not elicit a corrective response.
Steps Taken to Reduce, Eliminate, and Prevent Recurrence of the Noncom-plying Discharge -- Flow rate checks have been increased to once per shift.
We are also evaluating a system of flow meters and recorders which could integrate all sodium hypochlorite flows and annunciate approaching limits.
