Byron Station's Follow-up Response to NRC Request For Additional Information (RAl) - Generic Letter 95-07, " Pressure Locking and Thermal Binding of Safety Related Power-Operated Gate Valves" Byron Station Units 1 and 2 Facility Operating Licenses NPF-37 and NPF-66 NRC Docket Nos. 50-454 and 50-455

Reference:

Letter from Peter L. Piet to U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, dated July 5, 1996, transmitting the Response to a NRC Request For Additional Information regarding the Commonwealth Edison 180 day response to Generic Letter 95-07.

In Generic Letter 95-07, the NRC requested licensees ensure that safety related power operated gate valves susceptible to pressure locking or thermal binding are capable of performing their safety function within the current licensing bases of the facility.

In the referenced !ctter, Commonwealth Edison provided a response to the NRC request for additional information (RAI) regarding various aspects of the 180 day response to Generic Letter 95-07. The Byron response to NRC question 1 indicated that a design change was being considered for the 1(2)RH8716A valves, however, evaluations to determine the appropriateness of this design were still in progress. These evaluations are now complete and a change (hole drilled in one side of the disc) has been designed for these valves. This design change is currently scheduled for installation during the next refueling outages for Byron Units 1 and 2.

if there are any questions required on this matter, please contact Marcia Lesniak, Nuclear Licensing Administrator, at (630)663-6484, 1
