uq UNITED STATES y/ p an g NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION r, a wAsHWGTON, D. C. 20555

%,*..../ October 3, 1985 D:cket No. 99900827/85-01 Elma Engineering Incorporated ATTN: Mr. Thomas A. Beno Vice President and QA Manager 1066 East Meadow Circle Palo Alto, California 94303

Dear Mr. Beno:

This refers to the inspection conducted by Mr. J. J. Petrosino of this office on May 1,1985, of your facility at Palo Alto, California, and to the discussions of our findings with you at the conclusion of the inspection.

The purpose of this inspection was to review and evaluate correspondence between Elma Engineering Incorporated (EEI) and customers who purchased ferroresonant power supply units for nuclear power plant use. Enforcement actions have already been taken on these issues in Vendor Program Branch inspection report #99900827/

84-01. We have received and found your corrective action plan responsive to the concerns. No action or response is required by EEI for this report. Corrective action implementation will be reviewed during a future NRC inspection.

Additionally, information concerning nuclear power plant locations where your power supplies were shipped was reviewed.

In accordance with 10 CFR 2.790 of the Commission's regulations, a copy of this letter and the enclosed inspection report will be placed in the NRC's Public Document Room.

We note that, as of the time of this inspection, the EEI customers listed in this report had not been notified of potential hardware deficiencies in power supply units sold them by EEI. We will provide these customers with copies of this report to alert them to potential defects.

  • Should you have any questions concerning this inspection, we will be pleased to discuss them with you.

Sincerely,

/

?

\
