, a, Ms. Katherine E. Qawasmy P. O. Box 20 IN RESPONSE REFER West Point, PA 19486 TO F01A-85-323

Dear Ms. Oawasmy:

This is in response to your letter of April 29, 1985, in which you requested, pursuant to the Freedom of Information Act (F0IA), a list of names and addresses of U. S. companies licensed to sterilize medical packaging components by gamma radiation.

The NRC maintains data concerning licensed irradiators, but we have no information as to which of these sterilize medical packaging.

We are enclosing two documents subject to your request. One is a letter dated September 14, 1984, which encloses a list of pool irradiators licensed by Agreement States as of July 1984. The term " pool" refers to a pool of water used to shell the gamma sources when they are in storage. Other methods of storage (e.g., in air or in a shielded enclosure) are also used, but we do nr.

maintain a listing of these facilities.

The second document is a computer printout of irradiators (greater than 10,000 curies) licensed by NRC. The charge for the computer run is S14.26. You will receive a bill for this amount from the NRC's Division of Accounting and Finance.
