Supplementary Information: The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has scheduled a new course, Health Physics for Uranium Recovery (H-109) to be held February 5-6,1997 at NRC headquarters in Rockville, MD. The course will cover fundamental aspects of health physics for uranium recovery (i.e., uranium mining and milling including in situ leach facilities).
Topics include: fundamentals such as radiation terms, types of radiation and their relative hazards, radioactive decay, biological effects, dose limits; relevant regulations and standards, special properties and hazards of uranium and its decay products; the uranium decay chain; special concerns and issues involving Rn-222; external and internal dose control; contamination control; and air sampling and bioassay. The course is designed at a fundamental level and will provide geologists, earth scientists and other individuals, without a health physics background, with a familiarity with the above areas so that they can more effectively interact with health physicists who work on uranium recovery projects.
Information will be sent to attendees prior to the course which provide fundamental pre-reading material.
Attendance at this course is primarily for mill Agreement State staff, however, other Agreement State staff with interest in this area may also attend, all on a space available basis. The Agreement State will be responsible for travel and per diem expenses for their respective attendees. Applications for the course should be submitted by January 6,1997.
When submitting an application, the State should indicate that funds are available for travel and per diem expenses.
