4 Nuclear Regulatory Commission Response

1. Technical points of contact: divisions, names, phones, addresses.

The point of contact for notifying the Nuclear Regulatory Commission j (USNRC) of all incidents is our. 24-hour Operations Center. The primary phone number is (301) 816-5100. Backup phone numbers are (301) 951-0550 and (301) 415-0550.

The Operations Center is part of the Incident Response Division located l at 11545 Rockville Pike, Rockville, MD 20852.
2. What NRC information is currently being utilized by your j agency / division?

l We use informtion related to incidents involving radioactive material 1 or facilities utilizing radioactive material (except military applications).

3. What NRC informamn does your agency need or desire for future use? .

We require notification of international events involving foreign reactors or radiological materials. The recent International Nuclear Exercise 2 conducted on November 7, 1996, highlighted the fact that the USNRC is not on the NRC's call list for such incidents.

4. Any specific " triggers" for your agency's notification?

None. We would want to be informed of all events involving radioactive material or involving facilities utilizing radioactive material (except military applications).

5. Means of communication desired?

We require information to be communicated via telephone. Phone notifications may be followed up with facsimiles to provide clarity.

6. Critical time of communication. How rapidly does your agency want the information?

We want the information "immediately" by voice.

7. How would your agency sort captured data? By date, material, region, state, location, etc. What periodic reports would your agency require from NRC?

We catalogue the notifications by date. No periodic reports are required.

8. What is the current and planned operating environment (s) within your agency / division (i.e., Hardware / Software, Database Mgmt., Networks, Communications, Mail Services).

This is not applicable since we require voice communication. In addition, the hardware and software of our Operations Center is part of an independent network such that computer interface is not possible.

9. Is there any data which are currently included in NRC reports which you do not utilize?

No.

10. Additional information: Any additional information (not covered above) the NRC can provide which would benefit the operation of your agency and/or the environmental response mechanism.

We would want provided any information involving radioactive material or facilities utilizing radioactive material (except military applications) that is not already provided.
