Dear Dr. Snyder:

Three Mile Island Nuclear Station, Unit 2 (TMI-2)

Operating License No. DPR-73 Docket No. 50-320 Auxiliary and Fuel Handling Building Decontamination Schedule In accordance with your letter dated March 7, 1984, the following is the status of the Auxiliary and Fuel Handling Building Decontamination Schedule for the second quarter of 1985. This update lists only those areas where Technical Specification Surveillances are not being performed due to ALARA considerations.

Make-up Filter Cubicle ALARA exemption is being taken for Technical Specification Surveillance 4210-SUR-3775.02 (4331-R3), " Fire barrier Penetration Fire Seal Inspection".

Curing the past quarter, this cubicle remained inaccessible due to the housed portions of the Make-up and Purification Cesium Elution Process.

Radiation levels in the cubicle still remain high, i.e., 2-4 R/hr.

Removal of the elution equipment is currently in the planning stage.

Once the elution equipment is removed, additional flushing will be performed to further reduce radiological dose rates.

f B. J. Snyder July 15,1985 4410-85-L-0149 Seal Injection Cubicle ALARA exemption is currently being taken for Technical Specification Surveillance 4210-SUR-3244.01 (4301-M8), " Containment Integrity Verification".

During the past quarter, no additional decontamination activities were performed in this cubicle due to the high radiation levels. The gamma radiation dose rate for the general area is 25 R/hr with hot spots up to 110 R/hr.

GPU Nuclear is continuing to evaluate the use of remote techniques for decontaminating this cubicle. Additionally, GPU Nuclear is evaluating the possibility of augmenting the cubicle's ventilation system which will enhance the accessibility of this cubicle.

Make-up Pump Suction and Discharge Valve Alley ALARA exemption is being taken for Technical Specification Surveillances 4210-SUR-3775.02 (4331-R3) and 4210-SUR-3775.01 (4331-A1), " Fire Barrier Penetration Fire Seal Inspections".

During the past quarter, additional decontamination flushes were performed in the cubicle. During a hot water flush of MU-V-155, which is a beta source, packing deterioration and leakage was observed.

General area radiation levels in this cubicle range from 150-200 mR/hr in the suction alley to 1-2 R/hr in the discharge alley.

No further decontamination activities in this cubicle are scheduled for this quarter. An engineering evaluation of draining the Make-up and Purification System will be performed during this quarter. Draining of the above referenced system will reduce the source term contaminant.

305' Elevation Make-up Valve Alley ALARA exemption is being taken for Technical Specification Surveillance 4210-SUR-3775.02 (4331-R3), " Fire Barrier Penetration Fire Seal Inspection".

During the past quarter, gross decontamination of the cubicle was completed. The general area radiological dose rate is approximately 400 mR/hr. A few hot spots, which average 2-3 R/hr, remain in the piping and related components.

/

B. J. Snyder July 15, 1985 4410-85-L-0149 The piping will have to be internally flushed to reduce the current levels. The flushing can only be accomplished once the Make-up Filter Cubicle is accessible.

The accessibility of the 305' Elevation Make-up Valve Alley is being accessed to determine whether the performance of the Technical Specification Surveillance would be appropriate and consistent with ALARA.

Sincerely, y
