SUBJECT:

Independent Safety Assessment l

Dear Chairman Jackson:

l The purpose of this letter is to follow up on the October 18,1996, Commission meeting regarding the Independent Safety Assessment (ISA) of Maine Yankee. I attended the meeting and appreciated l

the Commission's wide ranging and thoughtful discussion of the Assessment. As Mr. Merschoff l

indicated to you, Maine Yankee appreciated the excellent effort of your staff and the State of Maine l

in carrying out the Assessment. Overall, we found that the ISA was a learning experience which will l

contribute to further improvements at Maine Yankee.

i We would like to follow up on the Commission's desire to meet with Maine Yankee management to discuss Maine Yankee's response to the ISA, including the Maine Yankee Business Plan, the Commitment to Excellence Plan and the improvements for specific technical issues raised during

(

the course of the ISA.

I will contact your staff to find a mutually agreeable time for Maine Yankee senior management to personally brief the Commission on the corrective actions we have put into place at Maine Yankee.

Sincerely, l

,,Y
