g j gg, This is in regard to your request dated November 4. 1996, for approval of a route to be used for trans) ort of spent fuel from McMaster University.
Hamilton, Ontario. to the Jepartment of Energy's Savannah River Site near Aiken South Carolina, The route, as set forth in Enclosure 1. meets the regulatory requirements of 10 CFR 73.37. constitutes approval for this route.
Unless renewed, this route approval will expire two years from the date of this letter.
Note that transportation of licensed radioactive material must be conducted in compliance with the applicable U.S. Department of Transporta-tion regulations.
NRC staff have completed the arrangements with law enforcement agencies required by 10 CFR 73.37(b)(6).
Note that armed escorts are required for the urbanized areas of Buffalo, New York: Erie and Pittsburg, Pennsylvania:
Charleston West Virginia: Charlotte, North Carolina; and Columbia, South Carolina.
Information on law enforcement arrangements is provided in, and is to be incorporated into your shipment plans and provided to your carrier along with instructions regarding its use.
If your carrier deviates from the a) proved route, please 3rovide details of the deviation to the contact listed Jelow as soon as possi]le.
The notification requirements of 10 CFR 73.37(f) and 73.72 ap31y for each shipment. When making notification to this office under 10 C R 73.72, please confirm that armed escort will be provided as required, and that the appro-priate governors or designees will or have been notified.
