SUBJECT:

REQUEST FOR EXTENSION OF COMMENT PERIOD ON DRAFT POLICY STATEMENT

Dear Mr. Gunter:

I am responding to your letter of November 6, 1996, in which you request that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission extend the comment period for its Draft Policy Statement on the Restructuring and Economic Deregulation of the Electric Utility Industry.

The NRC staff has reviewed your extension request and has determined that granting an extension would not be detrimental to the public health and safety and is otherwise in the public interest.

It will issue a Federal Reaister notice to extend the due date for public comment on the draft policy statement to February 9, 1997.

If you have any questions, please call Mr. Robert Wood at (301) 415-1255.

Sincerely, l

fk
