Mr. Harold R. Denton, Director Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, DC 20555

Subject:

Zion Nuclear Poser Station Units 1 and 2 Fire Protection NRC Docket Nos. 50-295 and 50-304

Reference:

August 31, 1984 letter from R. N. Cascarano to H. R. Denton.

Dear Mr. Denton:

The referenced letter submitted for your review and approval a modification implementation schedule of the work necessary to achieve compli-ance with 10 CFR 50, Appendix R. The purpose of this letter is to provide you with an updated senedule (attached). In general, the modification work has been proceeding in accordance with the original estimates. However, there are three items that have been altered. These are discussed individually below.

Item 4 The handwheel chains and declutch levers for MOV-MS0005, MOV-MS000ll, and MOV-RH8701 were not installed because the valve manufacturer was unable to support the seismic qualification of these additions. As an alternativs, ladders have been chained in place adjacent to these valves. This will allow manual operation of these valves. This work is complete.

ITEM 12 The fire wrapping of 2C AFW pump has been delayed until the Fall, 1985 refueling cutage. This will preclude wrapping the cables and then connecting the same cables only two months later. The performance of both activities during the same time frame will better ensure the integrity of the fire wrapping.

1 H. R. Denton July 9, 1985 ITEM 22 The fireproofing of the structural ceiling beams in the ESF switcngear rooms has been delayed until the next available refueling outage. This schedule change will reduce the probability of reactor trips inadvertently causeo by the construction activity in the rooms.

If any questions arise concerning this matter, please direct them to this office.

Very truly yours, P. C. LeBlond Nuclear Licensing Administrator 1m Attachment cc: NRC Rasident Inspector - Zion J. Norris - NRR U347K
