!bni tor We1.1 517-M2 has been on excursion sir.ce ': arch 8,1984. Cor . ping has 1ewered the cerf ac:.ivity sad sulfate values to some extent. Per their September 18, 1984 letter, Westinghouse believes that a casing break exists at approximately 70 feet belew surface in that well. They believe that the mixing of an overlying aquifer with the underlying aquifer is causing the excursion status. Also, in conversations with Glenn !! coney (District III Of fice), it has been brought to my attention that Westinfmuse has lest two or three punps down this .: ell.

A rep 1:wcrant well, 517-:;'12, has been drilled next to 517-M2. A letter of Septenber 18, 1984, suggests that baseline samples have not yet been collected for this replacement well.

II. Discussion i Since Uell 517-M2 was already on excursion status and the replacement well is next to the original well, it is reconmended that the original baseline and UCL's be applied to the replacement well. This procedure would assure that the baseline and UCL's are representative of the unaffected aquifer conditions. Since the two wells are very close, it is expected that the water quality will be very similar.

The original well should be plugged in a nanner that will prevent the cross-contamination of aquifers.

III. Pec c:acndations It is recem. mended that the baseline and UCL's of 517-M2 be applied to 517- 212.

The new well should replace 517-M2's monitor functions. It is also recommended that the original well be plugged.
