Subject:

Clarification of RCP Trip Criteria Gentlemen:

In reviewing the correspondence regarding Maine Yankee's response to Generic Letter 83-10, we have noted that our revised RCP trip criteria has not been specifically identified to the bRC. This criteria has, however, been mentioned as a portion of the responses to NRC questions, Reference (b), in Reference (e).

For purposes of clarification, Maine Yankee would like to correct this oversight by specifying the criteria.

The RCPs will be manually tripped upon reaching a core exit subcooling of 250F. This subcooling level also corresponds to the Subcooling Margin Monitor Low Margin Alarm. An further protection, the plant operators are instructed to trip individual RuPs if excessive shaft vibration or severe pump amperage oscillations are observed.

The criteria specified above are supported by analysis as documented in References (c), (d), and (e).

The Emergency Operating Procedures are in the process of being revised to reflect the new criteria.

The previous criteria of manually tripping the RCPs on a SIAS alarm will be eliminated.
