Dear Mr. Denton:
In the natter of the
)
Docket Nos. 50-327 Tennessee Valley Authority
)
50-328 By your letters dated April 3, and November 30, 1984 to H. G. Parris, NRC approved TVA's request for extension of the deadlines for units 1 and 2 at our Sequoyah Nuclear Plant (SQN) for environmental qualification of electrical equipment. As requested in the March 25, 1985 meeting with NRC, regarding environmental qualification, an updated status of SQN's progress to complete environmental qualification of all equipment, as well as an explanation of the items that had been added since our extension request dated March 23, 1984, was submitted on March 27, 1985 by my letter to you.
For unit 1, as stated in the March 27 letter, SQN lacked environmental i
' qualification on approximately 166 components because of procurement, 1
delivery, and installation related problems. For unit 2, as stated in the March 27, 1985 letter, SQN had reduced the number of Category IV components to only one component. 'For both units, SQN has now completed replacement or qualification of all electrical equipment previously identified to NRC as l
being unqualified.
Since NRC has not provided guidance for problems identified after the plant specific " goals" for environmental qualification and since units 1 and 2 at SQN have passed these timeframes, we have developed guidelines for evaluating any additional environmental qualification problems that may occur.
We also believe the utilization of the regulations, 10 CFR 50.72-and 50.73, provide the necessary reporting requirements. At the present time, we are evaluating the environmental qualification status of two categories of components.
These are cables and terminal blocks. For these components, a special report will be submitted to NRC-Region II outlining the qualification status, a plan for resolving the issue, and a schedule for completion. Also, a justification for
' continued operation will be provided.
