Mr. Eric Abelquist, Project Leader.

Dear Mr. Abe1quist:
This letter confirms our telephone discussion of October 7,1996, about an assistance visit by staff members of the United States Department of Energy's Radiological and Environmental Sciences Laboratory (RESL).
The objective of the assistance visit will focus on the chemical procedures and instrumentation associated with the analysis of plutonium and uranium in soil. The visit will i
be held November 5 and 6, 1996.
i As part of the assistance visit, RESL will provide six single-blind soil l
samples for analysis by ORISE. The samples, containing plutonium and uranium, will be shipped to ORISE in mid-October. The ORISE' analysis of the samples will serve as an indicator of performance and provide a focus area for the assistance visit. ORISE should plan to perform the chemical separation and concentration of the alpha-emitting isotopes before the RESL visit; ORISE should plan to perform the alpha spectroscopy during the RESL visit.
The assistance visit will be performed in conjunction with RESL's on-site effort to obtain information to develop the laboratory audit plates.
Donna Moser and I plan to be present during the time RESL is at ORISE. As we discussed, Ms. Moser will be in contact with Ms. Payne of ORISE regarding details and coordination of the RESL visit.
Sincerely, i
Ronald B. Uleck, NMSS Technical Monitor for Survey Contracts Materials Decommissioning Section Low-Level Waste and Decommissioning Projects Branch Division of Waste Management Office of Nuclear Material Safety i
