Dear Mr. Lovelace:
This is in response to your letter dated January 17, 1985, in which you requested, pursuant to the Freedom of Information Act (F0IA), copies of records maintained by the NRC related to the process of substance identification known as " Neutron Activation Analysis." You requested detailed descriptions of the process of neutron activation, schematic drawings of the actual mechanisms-involved and their specific functions. You also requested copies of any doc'uments related to the percent reliability of this process in actual substance identification.
Finally, you asked if the process is still held to a valid substance identification process.
This is to inform..you that activation analysis activities are not regulated or licensed by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Consequently, we do not maintain records dealing with that subject in our agency files. However, the staff has provided excerpts from a publication that may be of interest to you.
The staff noted that a great deal of information on this subject is already available in scientific literature available in any large public l
library collection. You may wish, for example, to write to a university librarian to obtain assistance in locating and gaining access to published l
