Subject:
Spent Fuel Racks Gentlemen:
In Reference (b) we identified a discrepancy between the dimensions of the flux-trap water gap of the new spent fuel racks which were assumed in the safety analysis and the as-built dimensions. As we discussed, we have decided to modify the racks to allow'the air space surrounding the boral sheets to flood with water.
This modification will ensure that the Keff remains less than 0.95 for all spent fuel and anticipated new fuel configurations.
The modification vill be completed on the Phase II racks prior to placing the racks in the pool.
The modification will be completed on the Phase I racks following this refueling outage. The Phase I racks have actual
-flux-trap water gaps which E,re sufficient to ensure K rr less than.95 when e
loaded with fresh Cycle 9 fuel in a worst case configuration.
Please call me if you have any questions in this matter.
Very truly yours, MAINE YANKEE ATOMIC POWER COWANY 8506050232 050 9
