SUBJECT:

EVAPORATION COMPLEX SAFETY ASSESSMENT Dear Mr. Shear.

This letter is to communicate our ISA schedule and assessment of evaporation capacity versus long term production needs, as described in our 29 August 1996 action plan to restart the evaporation complex.

1 As you are aware, we have been conducting an integrated safety assessment for this process area. The team has issued an interim report with the purpose of proposing improvements to the currently planned filtrate system installation. As a result of these proporad changes, modifications to drawings and procedures of the proposed systems are required. The team will j

complete their assessment upon the acceptance of the proposed modifications and their incorporation into the design bases documentation. These tasks are scheduled to be completed by 10/31/96. The assessment team believes the system capacities are acceptable for future production needs.

We will continue to keep you informed of our progress in this area. Please call if you have any further questions.

Very truly yours, Robert W. Sharkey Director, Regulatory Affairs RWS:cac
