Dear Dr. Lyman:

i j Thank you for your letter of August 28, 1996, to NRC Chairman j Jackson commenting on the July 10, 1996 letter of the Advisory Committee on Nuclear Waste (ACNW) on the health effects of low

~

! levels of radiation. In light of recent studies revealing j substantial new data on this important subject, the Au,W

! recommended a critical examination of all available information.

! This examination is being carried out by a committee of the

National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements (NCRP),

j comprised of a diverse group of experts in a variety of relevant

! scientific and technical fields. The composition of the j committee is intended to ensure that the assessment will be

! conducted in an objective and balanced manner. In addition, a number of regulatory and scientific groups will be provided an 4

opportunity to comment prior to final NCRP approval of this

committee's report. The Commission'and the ACNW will be advised j of the progress of this assessment and of relavant issues, including those raised in your letter.

In response to your request, the background material upon which j

the ACNW based its letter has been placed in the NRC Public Document Room. The material also provides insights into the

! technical issues you raised. If you need further assistance or

information, please contact Dr. John Larkins, Executive Director 2 of the ACNW. He can be reached by telephone on 301-415-7360.

i Sincerely, t
