' monitor. Radiation levels in all areas surveyed were at or below back-

3N As per my phone conversation with [ Kathy Wolf on Friday, March 19, 7
1982 I am enclosing the information that she requested regarding the Plutonium-Beryllium neutron sources that are presently in our possession.
We have five (5) PuBe neutron sources that are owned by the D.O.E.
(formerly the U.S. A.E.C.) each of which contains 16 gms of Plu-tonium.
These sources were manufactured by Monsanto Research Cor-poration at Mound Laboratory for the A.E.C. back in 1957, at which point they were loaned to us by the A.E.C. under License #CSA-3839 for use in a s.ub-critical assembly.
The serial numbers of the sources are'M,-123, M-124, M-125, M-126 and M-127.
During the Winter quarter of-this year the sub-critical assembly was phased out of our nuclear physics program and.therefore dis-mantled.
Since this assembly no longer exists, there is no fur-ther need for the PuBe sources, and therefore we are sending you this information so that we may properly dispbse of the neutron sources and eliminate any possible health hazard associated with their-possession.
4 The sources have been carefully wipe tested and visua'lly inspec-ted as per D.O.E. regulations and.no leakage has been detected.
The above information will enable you to begin the disposal pro-cedure and I am looking forward to hearing from you.
