NRC TO HOLD WORKSHOP IN ROCKVILLE, MARYLAND ON LICENSE RENEWAL FOR NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will hold a public l

workshop October 29 in Rockville, Maryland, on requirements for the renewal of operating licenses for nuclear power plants.

Operating licenses for the plants are issued for terms of up to 40 years, and may be renewed for an additional 20 years if NRC requirements are met.

So far, no operating plants have reached the end of their initial 40-year license term and no licensees have applir* for license renewal.

workshop the NRC staff will discuss draft guidance on acceptable methods for meeting the renewal requirements.

The guidance would endorse an industry guideline prepared by the Nuclear Energy Institute.

l The workshop will be held from 8 a.m.

to 5 p.m.

in the auditorium of NRC's Two White Flint North Building, 11545 Rockville Pike.

Interested persons are also invited to submit written comments on the proposed NRC guidance, which'is contained in Draft Regulatory Guide DG-1047, " Standard Format and Content for Applications to Renew Nuclear Power Plant Operating Licenses."

As previously announced in a Federal Register notice on August 26, the comments should be submitted by November 29.

They should be addressed to the Rules Review and Directives Branch, Division of Freedom of Information and Publications Services, Office of Administration, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Washington, DC 20555.
