Docket No. 50-309 MEMORANDUM FOR: James R. Miller, Chief Operating Reactors Branch #3 Division of Licensing FROM: Patrick M. Sears, Project Manager

' Operating Reactors Branch #3 Division of Licensing Kenneth L. Heitner, Project Manager Operating Reactors Branch #3 Division of Licensing

SUBJECT:

SUMMARY

OF MAY 8, 1985 MEETING WITH MAINE YANKEE ATOMIC POWER COMPANY-AND NRC STAFF REGARDING 0FFISTE POWER SUPPLIES At the request of NRC staff, a meeting was held on May'8, 1985 at NRC's offices in Bethesda on the above subject. The purpose of the meeting was to d'scuss and resolve technical issues concerning testing of the offsite l- ' power line, the validation of a computer model of the plant internal distribution system, and use of a computer model describing the external grid.

NRC introductory remarks were made by K. Heitner. Maine Yankee Atomic Power Company' introductory remarks were made by D. Whittier.

The meeting focused on the request of Power Systems Branch (PSB) personnel to see a demonstration test of the offsite power line from Surowiec at the

-next Maine Yankee outage. Maine Yankee personnel told of the existence of a large comprehensive computer model describing the grid external.to Maine Yankee. It was agreed that there would be a demonstration test at this outage to show the adequacy of the Surowiec line and that the results of the demonstration test would be correlated to the predtetions of the large computer model. Maine Yankee personnel also agreed to perform that demonstration test at each subsequent outage to show adequacy of the Surowiec line because external loads on that line are growing.-

DR h lQh9 PDR

Maine Yankee personnel agreed to update the computer model for the internal power grid within the plant and to check computer calculations based on that model with actual test data.

The results of the tests and computer runs would be forwarded to NRC for staff review. The internal grid model update and correlation would be transmitted in approximately two months..

The staff agreed that, if the correlations are satisfactory, their. Offsite Power review would be complete, with no further questions.
