SUBJECT:

Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant Unit 1 Wide Range Noble, Gas Effluent Monitor Inoperable

Dear Dr. Murley:

On March 5,1985, the Main Vent Wide Range Noble Gas (WRNGM) Effluent Monitor was declared inoperable and Action Statement 3.3.3.1b entered, consistent with the recently received Technical Specifications for this System.

The action required by 3.3.3.1b, if the System operability cannot be restored in seven days, is to prepare and submit a Special Report to the Commission pursuant to Specification 6.9.2. That report was submitted to you on April 4,1985.

As stated in the report, the reason for the inoperability was a failed GA Technologies RM-23 keyboard module wnich is used to control radiation detection sensors and to process and store signals. This module was returned to GA Technologies for repair.

Recently, the module was returned by GA Technologies who indicated the module was functioning properly. The module was installed in the System and it would not function properly. The manufacturer has been requested to send a representative to the plant to effect on-site repairs and is expected to arrive on July 22,1985.
