(Pidu/L/K 4550 Broomes Island Road Port Republic, Maryland 20676 February 8, 1993 Mr. James M. Taylor Executive Director for Onorations U. 3. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D. C. 20555 Dear Mr. Taylor I am requesting the Nuclear Regulatory Commission not to permit the Baltimore Gas and Electric Company to store spent nuclear fuel in the above-ground storage facility at the Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Plant.
I feel many haze is already exist in our small desire to make county as a result of the utility companies' profits at the expense of the residents' health and safety. The nuclear plant, with its history of problems, is a constant throat.
The C olumbia Gas Plant, located. a few miles from the will resume operation very soon and will be nuclear plant, sending gas through our county by means of a large underground pipeline -- ancther threat should a gas explosion occur near the nuc] ear plent.
If Baltimore Gas and Electric Comnany could convert to a gas fueled plant, the problems involved in nuclear plant operation and the storage of spent fuel would not exist.
Changing to a gas-fueled plant would not cause BG&3 to go out of business or cause employees to lose jobs.
Our small county is no longer rural.
More and more subdivisions are being built and the population is increasing with the need for more schools.
Several schools are located a-few miles from the nuclear plant.
Our highways are busy in normal times.
In case of an emergency such as a nuclear accident, evacuation of all residents would be very slow and very dangerous.
I sunport the request made by the Maryland Safe Energy Coalition to halt the plan to store spent nuclear fuel in the above-ground facility at the nuclear plant and to open hearings for further information on the dangers of above-ground storage of spent nuclear fuel at the Calvert Cliffs Plant.
I would appreciate your consideration of my request thus show-ing your concern for the health and safety of residents living in this area.
Sincerely, hm.z 6 MY21udsJ Alma C. Harkness (Mrs. Harry H.)
