RE:
Statement of Local Officials Submitted by Larry J. Hochendoner We are the official's whom the people of Central Pennsylvania have elected to serve their interests.
We deliver this statement on their behalf.
In the past six years, we have lived in the af termath of the worst corrmercial nuclear accident in our nation's history.
During those six years, GPU and the nuclear ir.dustry have had a chance to educate our citizens, to make TMI safe, and to restore peoples confidence.
Three years and four days ago, our citizens expressed their judgment by a two to one margin that TMI Unit i should remain closed.
We have no reason to believe that their judgment j
would be any different today.
We say this as representatives of more than hundreds of thou-sands of people.
But we also say it as leaders of our conmun i t i e s.
Our position is not merely one of reflecting what our people want.
Our position also reflects our indi-vidual decisions that TMI should remain closed.
In many ways, we have become as expert as the NRC itself on the various problems at TMI.
We have spent countless hours studying the problems; meeting with congressmen, senators, GPU, and other interested parties; preparing testimonies; divising evacuation plans; and urging our people to respect the legal procedure for resolving the issues.
Now we ask you to respect our people in return.
We can see no compelling reason why this panel should ignore the j udgnen t of our Governor, our United State Senators and 8505300365 050520 PDR ADOCK 05000289 0

We urge you to keep TMI Unit I closed.
(Because of the time 1 imitations, the foflowing are just some.of.the officials who concur with the state-ment.
An original copy with the signatories of these officials and possibly others will be forthcoming.)
