Dear Dr. Jackson,

e i

t

. I write out of concern that the recent problems with Northeast Utilities j

nuclear reactors in Connecticut may indicate more widespread problems. NU shares owndership of reactors in Massachusetts, Vermont and Maine..In that all.

O four reactors in Connecticut have been shut down because of thousands of i

problems found in each, and in that the upper management of NU is now under l

criminal investigation. I think it would be prudent to shut down all reactors over which NU has influence. They all should be inspected with the detail that is being

{

given to Connecticut's Millstone and Haddam Neck reactors.

l As you know doubt are aware, Maine Yankee has suffered a-series of rather serious problems in the last _few months. I.think these problems have been numerous and serious enough to warrant a shutdown and an inspection. I'd be very surprised if these reported problems are anywhere _near the total number of problems. As'at Millstone, the handful of problems of reported problems is problably just the tip of an iceberg.

1 Right now the N'uclear Regulatory Commission is' trying to regain public trust.

The shutdown of Connecticut's reactors was a good start. But if the NRC restricts its new get-serious attitude to Connecticut, the public will not be fooled for long. The problems in Connecticut may_well be endemic throughout NU's area of influence and ownership. It would be impruden to pretend that NU i

has ' confined its negligence to Connecticut.

Sincerely, Glenn Cheney 9610090051 961007
