The Commission has received your letter _of' December 21, 1992,'and appreciates the views you-expressed regarding safety _and quality in the practices of nuclear medicine and. radiation oncology._ On behalf of the Commission, I can assure you that the NRC staff isi carefully reviewing the regulatory issues raised in the Clevelandi Plain DealgI series.

In doing so,- the commission. believes that-it is especially important to ascertain the factsfconcerning.the incidents described in the articles.

Our regulatory mission:

i requires _that the primary objective of this review'be the-identification and implementaticn of any improvements needed: in -

our regulatory program.

In this regard, the Commission was briefed by-the NRC staff in a-public session on January-22,-1993.

The staff' discussed 5medicall use regu atory issues,_the Plain-Dea 1er articles,'and many;of the issues that you raised-in your letter.

We have=also' scheduled'a public.. briefing: by.the NRC _ Agreement States on January 29, concerning state-regulation of medical uses'of? byproduct;materiali

and a public briefing on: February ~8:by the NRC. staff'teamLthat-investigated the two recent Oncology Services-incidents?in Pennsylvania.

Also. In late February, the:. Commission =expectsito schedule a-public briefing by the staff onia proposed radio -

i pharmacy rulemaking to address the' petition'. filed:by.the.American r

College of Nuclear Physicians:and the; Society-for Nuclear Medicine.

Moreover, we understand'that there;is;a high like--

4 lihood of future Congressional' hearings on.these matters.-
