Dear Mr Knighton:
We understand that the Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards has suggested that industry sponsored and initiated Probabilistic Risk Assessments (PRAs) be made available to them and to the NRC staff.
Accordingly, the attached document reports the results of a preliminary scoping assessment of plant safety using a limited ap-plication of probabilistic risk assessment technology.
Its analy-tical coverage was limited to those initiating events and aspects of plant response judged most important by the study team.
Broad un-certainties in the numerical results of this scoping study exist in comparison to a full-scope assessment.
The qualitative engineering conclusions and recommendations of the report, however, are con-sidered valuable.
In fact, we have already initiated plant improve-ments as well as continuing to develop our own in-house PRA capabil-ities should we decide, at some point after plant startup, to perform a detailed PRA.
If you should have any questions on this matter, please contact Mr M E Powell at (713) 993-1328.
Very rul
- yours,
(
