/e January 22, 1993 Docket Nos. 50-313 and 50-368 Mr. Jerry W. Yelverton Vice President, Operations ANO Entergy Operations, Inc.

Route 3 Box 137G Russellville, Arkansas 72801 C

Dear Mr. Yelverton:

SUBJECT:

RESPONSE TO NRC BULLETIN 92-01, SUPPLEMENT 1, " FAILURE OF THERM 0-LAG 330 FIRE BARRIER SYSTEM" (TAC NOS. M83839 AND M83840)

By letter dated September 29, 1992, you provided a response to NRC Bulletin 92-01, Supplement 1, for Arkansas Nuclear One, Units 1 and 2 (ANO-l&2). Your response stated that ANO-1 has no Thermo.-Lag 330 fire barriers. ANO-2, however, does contain such fire barriers, so appropriate compensatory measures have been implemented consistent.with the plant Safety Analysis Report (SAR) requirements for inoperable fire barriers.

You also provided a description of the long-term corrective action to ensure or restore operability.

As discussed in your response, the only application of the Thermo-Lag 330 fire barrier system at ANO is in the AN0-2 service water pump pits.

The service water pump pits are located in the intake structure below elevation 354 feet.

The barriers are pre-formed conduit shapes and panels on two 4-inch condutts.

These conduits are routed along the top of the pits to the "A" and "C" service water pumps. The conduits contain power cables for the pumps.

In accordance with SAR requirements for inoperable fire barriers, you verified the-operability of the fire detectors on at least one side of the affected barriers and posted a roving 1-hour fire watch to monitor the service water pump pits.

Your -response also states that, if th'e ANO-2 installed Thermo-Lag fire barriers are determined to be a concern, the. fire barrier configuration will either be qualified by third-party testing or engineering evaluations, or replaced with appropriate qualified material.

Until the barriers are qualified or replaced, the 1-hour roving fire watch wi'll remain in effect to monitor the service water pump pits.
