\...+J Transportation Certification Branch Approval Record Model No. 6272 Package Docket No. 71-6272 By application dated May 20, 1985, Department of Energy requested aprpoval of revised steel waste bins to be used in the Model No. 6272 package.

The previous waste bin was designated as M-3. The revised bins are designated as it-3A and M-4.

The enclosure to this Approval Record gives a physical comparison between the three bins. The bins are all of a similar construction with the revised bins having improved lid gaskets made of Neoprene with bonded corners . (The previous gasket material was weather stripping.) The M-4 bin has a lid constructed of 9-gauge carbon steel rather than 12-gauge for the M-3A.

The applicant requested that the neoprene gasket be inspected but not replaced on an annual basis. As a matter of practice, we require all reusable gaskets of this type to be replaced at least annually. No new infonnation was presented to change our position at this time.
