Dear Sir:

By letter of February 27, 1985, Boston Edison requested that an exemption be granted from the requirement that post-accident hydrogen monitors be capable of providing data thirty minutes after ECCS initiation. The major reason for this request was the chloride intrusion into sample lines associated with that system, which, coupled with the heat-traced line temperatures dictated by the thirty minute envelope, could potentially lead to sample line cracking. The alternative to exemption was line replacement, which would have dictated a final implementation extension.

Certain lines that were shown to be in jeopardy by chloride intrusion were replaced. We have received test results f rom a study concerning associated lines which indicates that their integrity is not in jeopardy. Therefore, the exemption is not necessary.

This letter is to document the withdrawal of the exemption request and the reason for its withdrawal. Should you wish further information on this request, please contact us.

Very truly yours, PMK/ns GROS 210267 850516 p ADOCK 05000293 PDR Ao%
