Dear Dr. Schoefp:

Please find enclosed an amendment to your N'RC Material License.

Please review the enclosed document carefully and be sure that you understand all conditions.

If there are any errors or questions, please notify the Region I Material Licensing Section, (215) 337-5093, so that we can provide appropriate corrections and answers.

Please be advised that you must conduct your program involving licensed radioactive materials in accordance with the conditions of your NRC license, representations made in your licease -

application, and NRC regulations. In particular, please note the items-.in the enclosed, "Requimments for Materials Licensees."

Since serious consequences to employees and the public can result from failure to comply with -

NRC requirements, the NRC expects licensees to pay meticulous attemion to detail and to achieve the high standard of compliance which the NRC expects of its licensees.

~ You will be periodically inspected by NRC. A fee may be charged for inspections in accordance with 10 CFR Part 170. Failure to conduct your program safely and in accordance with NRC

07ycWb Mr. David Mann Nuclear Regulatory Commission Region I 475 Allendale Road King of Prussia, PA 19406-1415

Dear Mr. Mann:

This letter is to officially notify your offica that the neutron howitzer source covered under the above named license has been relocated to its new storage site in the Biology Building, Room 001, on the campus of Bucknell University, Lewisburg, PA. In accord with NRC guidelines, a closecut survey has been made in the room of the former location of the source, i.e. Physical Plant Building. The physical plant storage site was surveyed using a GM detector and three wipe tests were performed: scrapings from the floor directly beneath the former position of the neutron howitzer

  • sqrapings from the west walloftheroomatapproximatelychestheldjht;Jandascrapingfrom the floor at the entrance to the room m 9:

m-  % ':

The GM detector survey measured b.sshanQQO3mR/hractivity, comparable to the background level mensurec 10 mdters outside of the stcrage room. All three wipe tests ryjealep less than 0.15 nCi of activity. Wipe tests were monitored using dS Beckman LS5000TD liquid scintillation detector with ECONOFLOR a's thE sci ~ntillation fluid.

Liquid scintillator count rates were compar6d to those obtained by a solid alpha calibration source (Po-210, 0.1 micro-C1, The Nucleus, Inc.) which was placed in the liquid scintillation detector in the same run as the wipe tests for purposes of calibration.

In view of the above results, I would like to request amendment to our license under article 10 of ' Conditions' to release the Physivel Plant Building storage site to unrestricted use and therefore remove this site from the license as a storage facility site as stated in article 10. I have contacted Sandra Kimberley in your Maryland office and she has verified that we still maintain a fee exempt status.

If I have neglected any details which are necessary to perform the above amendment to our license, please contact me as soon as possible.
