SUBJECT:

TRAVEL TO UMTRAP SITES The objectives of this trip are: 1) to visit the four Title I sites for which we expect to receive draft environmental assessments and remedial action plans during the fall of 1985, and 2) to observe construction activities at the Shiprock, NM site. The four new sites are Ambrosia Lake, NM, Tuba City, AZ, Monument Valley, AZ, and Mexican Hat, UT.

DOE has requested that NRC technical staff become involved at an early stage to streamline the review process. These early meetings will assist DOE in the preparation and documentation of NEPA and RAP documents and aid the NRC in the review of these documents. In recognition of the usefulness of these early meetings, DOE will dedicate a week of their and their contractors' time to provide the NRC a detailed tour of the sites, possible alternative sites, and pertinent adjacent areas. DOE stated that later in the year it would be inconvenient to provide the type of comprehensive visit currently planned.

Therefore, DOE and NRC have organized the meeting / site visits detailed in the enclosure. We feel this is the most efficient and timely use of NRC and DOE resources.

In addition to visiting the new sites, we will also observe preliminary construction activities at the Shiprock site. The Shiprock site still has outstanding issues and DOE will have their technical assistance contractors and remedial action contractors available at the site to discuss these remaining open issues with the NRC project manager and technical staff.

Staff participating in the site visits are: WM Record Fi!e WM Project 39 Decket No.
