As a rentdent of Plainwel Michigan, I live and work less than 30 miles (downwind) of the e lisades Suelenr Plant.
I havn concerns regarding the safety of e existing spent rod stora6,e systems and am a l a r gu ed a t the proposeu a.ove ground dry eask storage facility!
t It is my understanding that all proposals to build dry cask storage facilities must include an environmental impact survey, a cost / benefit analysis and public hearinen within the community of the proposed loaation.
Ther e inus t also be specific plans fer constant and careful monitoring of the casks and for safeguarding of waste to prevent catastrophic accidents or terrorism.
The cask that is proposett for the Palisades plant has never been period of several years in the tested in its intended size over a harsh climate of a Midwest winter.
These conditions can have a great 8.inpact on the structural int egr i t y of concre t e and tae t al subjected to high temperatures in the interior surface.
I'mbrittlement and corrosion are aluu enhanced by the cycling of outdoor temperatures which causes the opening and closing of microscopic pores in metals and concrete.
To my understanding, no container has over been made that will not eventually degrade and leak, especially when exposed to an environment such as we have in Michigan!
As designed, these casks will be vented to the air.
Temperatures insiste c., c a s k inayJ g e t hot enough to rupture fuel rods and tho'brei6n3F6f; hydrogen, even at minute levels, would create u r an i um hy'd r i'd te wh i cli i s.. n pon t a n eo u s l y flammable in the presence of oxygen.
Thaisti f acity all point toward the likelihood of a catastrophic release 'of" radiation.
AND 1 LIVE LESS TilAS 50 MILES DowSWIND!
