April 15, 1985 Honorable Nunzio J. Palladino Chainnan U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Comission Washington, D. C. 20555

Dear Dr. Palladino:

SUBJECT:

ACRS ROLE IN THE CIVILIAN RADI0 ACTIVE WASTE MANAGEMENT PROGRAM During its 300th meeting. April 11-13,1985 the ACRS considered its role in advising the NRC on matters pertaining to the civilian radioactive waste management program.

As you know, we have been interacting with the NRC Staff, primarily through our Waste Management Subcommittee, on various preliminary matters pertaining to licensing the U. S. Department of Energy to construct and operate a high-level waste repository.

To better support this effort, we have expanded the number and profes-sional backgrounds of ACRS consultants supporting this Subcommittee to include people experienced in geology, seismology, hydrology, geo-chemistry, and probabilistic risk ' analysis.

In view of the limited funding available to the ACRS, however, the number of Subcomittee meetings on this subject each year will be restricted to no more than three, as opposed to our original plan of six to eight.

By necessity, the number of issues on which the Subcomittee will be able to interact with the Staff, and the depth of that interaction, will also be limited.

The full Comittee will continue to provide oversight to the activities, findings, and recomendations of its Waste Management Subcomittee.

Although reports of the Subcomittee will be forwarded to the NRC Staff as part of the ACRS ineeting records, it is our plan that the full Comittee will deliberate and issue separate reports only on major issues.

Sincerely.

k David A. Warc Chairman l
