'I it'.
To the Secretary:
I am writing to express my opposition to dry cask storage of nuclear waste at the Palisades Power Plant in Michigan.
Since the Department of linergy is backing away from its commitment to assume responsibility for spent fuel disposal, it appears that the proposed 'emporary storage casks will become permanent facilities l" default.
At best, this will require several moves before (if ever) it reaches a final disposal facility.
In light of the potential hazards associated with spent reactor fuel, I
find this type of stop gap, short term planning incomprehensible.
I cannot believe that, given the known disposal problems, the benefits provided by the Palisades Plant are sufficient to risk the environmental integrity of the Great Lakes basin and threaten the health of Michigan residents.
I hope that you will consider initiating the following actions:
1.
Public hearings held in the region affected by the site.
2.
An-environmental impact statement filed with the State of Michigan and the liPA.
3.
A full cost / benefit analysis examining the cradle to grave expenses of Palisades power as compared to other sources of energy.
Thank you for your consideration of this matter.
Sincerely, "IfCW,f,
