Dear Senator Gore:

The Reactor Risk Reference Docurrent, NUREG-1150, provides the results of major risk analyses for five different U.S. light water reactors using state-of-the-art methods.

The broad base of probabilistic risk information contained in this document is intended to provide a data base and insights to be used in a number of regulatory applications.

The report is beirg published in draft form.

Since estimates of severe accident likelihoods, consequences, and risk and their use in regulation are important subjects, public coment is sought on the quality and fonrat of the information and how best to present it for use in the regulatory process.

The five plants studied in NUREG-1150 wcre chosen to represent a broad range of plant types.

They are the Virginia Electric Company's Surry plant near Newport News, Virginia; Commonwealth Edison's Zion plant near Chicago, Illinois, the Tennessee Valley Authority's Secuoyah plant near Chattanooga, Tennessee; Philadelphia Electric's Peach Bottom plant near Lancaster, Perreylvania; and Mississippi Power and Light's Grand Gulf plant near Vicksburg, Mississippi.

Enclosed is the Pain Report, Volume 1 of NUPEG-1150.

Volumes 2 ard 3 contain Appendices to the Main Report (incluaing plant specific results for We each of the five plants) and will be published in the r ext few days.

will provide you with copies of both Volumes 2 and 3 when they become available.

Sincerely, h /C N
