MEETING WITH GENERAL ACCOUNTING 0FFICE (GA0) 0FFICIALS TO DISCUSS THE BRANCH TECHNICAL POSITION (BTP) ON THE DISPOSAL ~

OF URANIUM AND THORIUM On December 29, 1992, Edward Shum and Jerry Swif t of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission met with E. Cornstein and D. Fitzgerald of GA0 at the NRC affice at White Flint North. The meeting was requested by the GA0 officials ts . discuss the technical basis of the NRC's BTP on the disposal of uranium and thorium (October 23, 1981, 46 FR 52061). According to the GA0 officials, they are preparing a report on the decommissioning of Chemetron for Senators J. Glenn and H. Metzenbaum and they would like to understand the technical basis of the BTP that NRC uses for the decommissioning and decontamination of the Chemetron facility. The NRC staff explained the dose criteria used for Option 1 and Option 2 of the BTP and the pathway analysis used to derive the soil t concentration limits. An illustration of the use of the Tables of the BTP was oresented and explained by NRC staff for the derivation of soil I concentration iim;;5 on depleted uranium which represents the contamination of ,4 the Chemetron site.
