Docket No.70-920 Inspection No. 70-920/85-01 Gentlemen:

This letter is Rensselaer's response to a routine safety inspection conducted by Mr. J. Roth, U.S. NRC on February 27 thru March 1,1985, and subsequent inspection report No. 70-920/85-01, dated May 2, 1985.

We would like to thank Mr. Roth for the professional manner in which he conducted his safety inspection and for the constructive recornnendations he has ms.de'.

The following responses are made to the above referenced inspection.

1.

As mentioned in the inspection report, inventories were kept in the Office of Radiation and Nuclear Safety. During the inspection, running inventories for each area of the Gaerttner Laboratory were posted. We will maintain these area inventories current as well as the Office of Radiation and Nuclear Safety inventories of the entire campus.

2.

The emergency exit door of the Blaw Knox I Waste Storage Area was immediately repaired following the inspection and is in use as an emergency exit with a crash bar.

3.

Rensselaer's TLD program has been improved by the addition of the tabulation of dose equivalent categories. This tabulation is available by department and by the entire school either on demand or at year's end.

This tabulation does add to our continual review of radiation exposures to Rennolaer's faculty, staff, and students.
