Dear SDMP Workshop Attendee:
DEC 1.519921 Thank you for attending the Site Decommissioning Management Plan Workshop sponsored
' ~ hy trie Nuclear Regulatory Commission on November 19;1992. We have enclosed copies of several documents for your review that were unavailable at the time of the workshop.
We were encouraged by the overwhelming response to this topic. Although fewer than 150 people had signed up for the workshop in advance (sign-up was not requested), more than 260 people attended the sessions. -These represented a broad spectrum of interested parties, including: site owners, citizens' groups, State officials, representatives from other Federal agencies, journalists, Congressional staff, law firms, and consulting firms, Based on the questions asked during the sessions, and evaluation forms handed out at the workshop, we believe the workshop was successfulin meeting its objective of improving the exchange of cornmunication on issues connected with remediation of these sites.
Many attendees indicated that additional workshops would be very useful, such as detailed discussions of site characterization, site surveys, or radiological criteria for decommissioning. The NRC is looking into the possibility of conducting additional sessions next year (within NRC's resource and budget constraints), and invite your suggestions on how we can work together to make site decommissioning a predictable and understandable process.
I have also included fvr your information a copy of the Federal Register notice announcing the workshops in support of the Enhanced Participatory Rulemaking on Radiological Criteria for Decommissioning. You may recall Chip Cameron's presentation about the plans for this rulemaking at the beginning c,f the afternoon session. These public workshops will be held from January through May of 1993.
